This case is a company analysis of Knox Eye Care, Inc., a manufacturer of eye products. Throughout the company's 40-year history it had registered increasing growth and profitability, but since the fourth quarter of 1985, growth had declined and profits had reduced. The recently-hired President of Knox was facing many challenges and the competition was becoming increasingly fierce. The case deals with such issues as deciding whether to focus on research and development or strategic marketing; dealing with being acquired by a larger company and reorganizing; and combating low employee morale.
